So last week I got this email after someone had read the latest episode of my weekly Sunday Success Stimulus email.

It went, and I quote…

“…You’re just full of shite – just like all of the other charlatans who trawl the internet, your folksy, matey, disingenuous style of writing fools no one – go away!!”

Wow, nice guy eh!

And the fact of the matter is, if you’re doing any sort of email lead generation or really online lead generation full stop – you’re gonna get this now and then.

But you know what…

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion and I actually thing getting hate mail is a GOOD thing.

Here’s why…

If you’re trying to please everyone, you’re pleasing no one.

If you’re pleasing no one, well, you’re probably not making any sales.

The reason we’re in business in because we offer a product or service that matches a a specific target market.

No one else need apply.

It’s kinda like in sales – you’ve got to get through some “no’s” to get to the “yes’s.”

Now when it comes to people being online it’s slightly different because instead of people simply telling you “no,” you’ll have a few who go off the deep end and decide write you a nasty email.

What should you do?

First, be happy!

If you’re pissing somebody off that bad, chances are you’re also making others happy.

Do you think Simon Cowl pisses a lot of X-Factor contestants off?

You bet!

Yet he’s a multi-multi-millionaire.

Second, don’t reply.

People who send you hate mail are trolls, and the moment you enter into a conversation with a troll you have lost.

So just ignore it.

Third, talk about the email to your other readers and customers.

Now, why would you do something crazy like that?

Well, people like to “belong.” And when they read the email, they will see it as written by someone outside of your clique.

It becomes an “us” vs “them” sort of thing, with you and your readers being the “us.”

Your audience will appreciate that they are a part of YOUR group and will see the offending party as an outsider, strengthening your bond with your folks.

So next time you get hate mail, smile and know that you are indeed doing something right.

Oh, one more thing – be sure to delete and blacklist the son of a bitch from every email list you’ve got! The best thing about this kind of person is never hearing from them again.

Getting hate mail is good generally because it means you’ve made an impact. And this means your work is being seen and is considered influential enough to motivate the haters to write. Unlike you, I do engage the hate mail trolls from time to time. It’s sort of a fun downtime activity. :-)
